Southern Poland is grappling with severe floods, the consequences of which are catastrophic. Numerous cities and smaller towns have been inundated. The Order of Malta is providing assistance in Oświęcim and Nysa, where on the night of September 15-16, volunteers of the Order’s Polish relief organisation, Maltańska Służba Medyczna (“MSM”), helped reinforce flood embankments and evacuate a Care Home. Unfortunately, MSM’s headquarters in Nysa have also been flooded.
Last weekend in Bielsko, Order of Malta volunteers prepared meals for dozens of affected inhabitants. An ambulance and team are on full alert, and on Wednesday night (18/09), the first transport with donations will depart for Nysa and Lądek-Zdrój. Volunteers from Czechowice-Dziedzice are safe and are receiving necessary support.
The Polish Association of the Order of Malta has established a crisis management team and remains in contact with the state crisis management centers in Katowice, in the Andrychów municipality, and with the deputy mayor of Wadowice county. Readiness to help has also been reported to the authorities in Bielsko-Biała.
Crisis management meetings will continue to be held in the flood-affected cities to determine priorities and possibilities for further assistance.
